A little bit since we’ve been able to post about Alef. But now there’s some news from the Mobile World Congress finally!
They showcased its innovative flying car (a mini version) for the first time at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, where it captured widespread attention.
Originating from California, Alef has been dedicated since 2015 to creating a vehicle that not only drives on roads but can also take off, land vertically, and fly. This ambition materialized with their "Model A," which notably achieved a unique Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) certification in 2023.
Chief Technology Officer Constantine Kisly described the vehicle as akin to the flying cars of science fiction, highlighting its dual functionality in driving and flying to bypass traffic without necessitating changes to existing infrastructure.
Alef announced it has received 3,000 pre-orders for its creation, which includes two prototypes capable of carrying two passengers. The "Model A" leads the pack with a promised range of 200 miles (320 kilometers) for both driving and flying. The company is eyeing the end of 2025 to start producing a final version that can transport two people up to 110 miles (170 kilometers).
The vehicle, powered by eight motors and lithium polymer (LiPo) batteries, showcases Alef's flexibility in potentially utilizing hydrogen fuel cells in the future. Despite an initial cost of around $300,000 (€376,600), Alef aims to lower the price to that of an average sedan through mass production, with nearly 3,000 pre-orders already placed.
Alef's flying car, entirely electric, combines the convenience of vertical takeoff and landing with the legal compliance to drive on roads. The company employs cutting-edge technology to elevate the car above traffic, aiming to alleviate urban congestion and offer quicker, more accessible transportation solutions.
The car's design features a mesh-top body with bubble-like chambers to seat one or two passengers, optimizing space for a comfortable journey.
Kisly emphasizes Alef's mission to tackle urban traffic challenges by exploring the potential of airspace, positioning the company as a pioneer in offering above-ground travel solutions. With plans to launch their air taxis by late 2025, Alef awaits regulatory updates for air traffic to realize this vision.
So the eternal question with Alef. Is it real? Let’s hope so!
