This is really old news and I didn’t realize it was still a thing, but I just found out that it IS still a thing. UPS is teaming up with Beta Technologies (BETA) to bring eVTOL aircraft into the heart of its operations. It's a leap into the future where deliveries are whisper-quiet, eco-friendly, and faster, especially in those snug small and mid-size markets.
UPS is using BETA aircraft that can carry 1,400 pounds each to move packages quickly and efficiently. These aircraft are used at UPS centers located strategically to reduce travel time, lower emissions, and cut costs significantly. They can fly 250 miles at up to 170 miles per hour, ideal for urgent deliveries like medical supplies or supporting small businesses. UPS is creating new delivery routes that change how we think about shipping.
Juan Perez, the Chief Information and Engineering Officer at UPS, emphasizes that this effort is all about innovation. This step benefits not just UPS and its customers but also the environment, thanks to the zero-emission nature of these aircraft.
BETA's eVTOL aircraft stand out because they can take off and land vertically using four propellers and have another propeller for forward flight, making them both stylish and green. They recharge quickly, being ready to fly again in under an hour.
Kyle Clark, BETA's founder, aims to revolutionize both air and ground logistics, making cargo transport more intelligent. He envisions converting small areas at UPS facilities into efficient air hubs without noise and pollution.
UPS is also adopting BETA's advanced recharging stations to keep the aircraft ready for action. Once the batteries are no longer suitable for flight, they'll be repurposed to power these charging stations and UPS's electric vehicles.
Looking ahead, BETA is exploring autonomous flight, a future UPS is also investing in through its drone operations. BETA's aircraft are breaking records in distance and altitude, expanding what's possible in air transport.
The first ten BETA aircraft are set to join UPS in 2024, with the possibility of increasing the fleet to 150. This collaboration aims to make deliveries faster and more eco-friendly, redefining urban logistics with every electric takeoff.
Laura Lane, UPS's Executive Vice President & Chief Corporate Affairs and Sustainability Officer, highlights this step as part of UPS's commitment to achieving 100% carbon neutrality by 2050, with interim goals like sourcing 30% of its aviation fuel from sustainable sources by 2035.
