As any aviation geek or tech nerd knows - we’ve all wanted the DeLorean from Back to the Future, sitting in our driveway attracting all the envy of the neighborhood.
That stainless steel chassis, pancake flat hood, gullwing doors, it’s a classic. But what about Back to the Future 2? Wouldn’t it be even better if it could fly?
Well apparently that could be a reality, if investors really dive into DeLorean new endeavor. They’ve announced the DR-7, which looks like a dual ducted fan vectoring flying car, with some very smooth lines. Now I must say - it does not look like a DeLorean. No boxy shape or square edges. The Tesla Cybertruck is far more inspired by the original Delorean.
So, listen up DeLorean. We know boxy things can fly. Look at the F-19 Stealth Fighter.
Oddly enough, there is no mention of the Car company on the website, so while reading the info page, I was starting to wonder if they are even related. Further digging revealed that DeLorean Aerospace was founded in 2012 in Laguna Beach, California, USA by Paul DeLorean, the nephew of famous car designer John DeLorean. The purpose of the company is to build electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) passenger aircraft for advanced air mobility (AAM).
Since it is not the original maker, I suppose it isn’t a requirement to maintain the iconic shape of the original - however - if you are using the name, you may as well pay homage to it in some way.
Paul, I hope you are reading this - and for the love of all of our childhoods, add some DeLorean to your flying DeLorean.
