Pod Racing... it actually might be happening
New flying car tech makes it possible with Airspeeder
If you grew up watching the second trilogy of Star Wars, you might be familiar with crazy jet powered hovering vehicles engaged in super dangerous combat racing. This not only makes for fun watching on the silver screen but also great video game experiences. But what if this could be real life?
Flashback to 15 years ago, I tried to build my own podracer using big ducted fans and a leaf blower for hovering (not kidding). It moved at a brisk pace - about 1mph. So pretty much a fail, but it moved at least.
Now enter Airspeeder, a company focused on making flying car racing a real thing. So far they have remotely controlled vehicles racing around (like drone racing) but they are getting closer and closer to the real full size racing spec - and their vehicles look badass. Reminds me a lot of Playstation’s WipEout - (personally I’m a big fan)
Alauda Aeronautics, the creator and technical team behind Airspeeder, the world’s first racing series for flying electric cars, has actually announced the successful conclusion of its 250th Test Flight, which sounds very promising.
On top of that, Alauda Aeronautics is set to establish the world’s first electric flying racing car factory in South Australia.
The cutting-edge factory, (with joint funding by the Government of South Australia) is dedicated to manufacturing racing vehicles for Airspeeder’s forthcoming racing series and has been identified as a potential facility within the Australian Space Park. The factory will also house the world’s first-ever production site for electric flying racing cars.
Why does the US not have a space park? We already have a Space Force. Might be worth the trip down under to check it out.
In more recent news, Airspeeder has teamed up with DAZN, a leading global sports streaming platform, to bring fans original sports content programming featuring highlights from the first Airspeeder EXA Series Race in South Australia, along with three content series.
Their motto: ‘We are the world’s first racing series for crewed flying electric cars.’ I’d say I’m sold on at least watching that.
